Mono County Welcomes John C. Craig as Assistant County Administrative Officer

MONO COUNTY, Calif. (DECEMBER 17, 2020) – On December 15th, the Mono County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a three-year employment agreement for John C. Craig as Assistant County Administrative Officer for Mono County. Mr. Craig most recently served as Deputy City Manager for Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and will officially start with Mono County on January 4, 2021.

Upon Bob Lawton’s promotion to County Administrative Officer (CAO), Mono County began an extensive recruitment to fill the vacant Assistant CAO position. The nationwide recruitment resulted in 41 candidates. This initial pool of candidates was narrowed down to seven, and an interview team designated by the county was tasked with interviewing each of the semi-finalists for final recommendations. The top three candidates were ultimately interviewed by CAO Lawton.

Mr. Craig has more than 20 years’ experience in county and city government, as well as the private sector, in a variety of disciplines and functions. Mr. Craig’s primary responsibilities as Assistant CAO will include supporting the CAO in development of the 2021-22 Countywide Strategic Plan and associated performance measurement criteria, in analyzing State and Federal mandates’ impact on County operations, in strengthening Mono County’s commitment to improved customer service, and in budget development and management.

Mr. Craig received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and his Master of Public Administration degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
